The roller skating rink
at Portmore Mall, which until now was generally acknowledged to be the
future
site
of CCW Arena, may have a new rival. According to sources within CCW, an
enterprising hotelier in nearby Port Henderson has been meeting with CCW
President Augustus Lee, and is urging the company to move the arena a few
minutes from the Mall, to a location right on the beach! Sources say the Horizon Hotel has offered an adjoining beach-front property to CCW to build its arena. Details are very sketchy, but all indications point to an open air venue. This presumably will to take advantage of the beach-side location, and give live events a more “island” flavour. According to one company insider, the hotel’s owner, an American named James Brown, was playing game of chess with Augie Lee when the subject first came up. Officials at CCW will only confirm that, “two locations are being discussed at this time, but no decision has been reached”. |

CCW's Launch Postponed Till 2004Citing lack of local participation, Caribbean Championship Wrestling has postponed its August launch until March 2004. In an exclusive interview in this issue of CCW Magazine, CCW President Augustus “Augie” Lee said, “With the current economic climate, investors prefer to hold on to their money, or buy government paper. This does nothing to stimulate new business, and CCW is a new business. A decision had to be made; wait for the Jamaican economy to turn around, or launch somewhere else.”Lee has spent most of the summer in the Unites States, searching for foreign investors willing to risk a Jamaican venture. The company has also been researching the possibility of launching in Trinidad & Tobago, which could stall any live pro wrestling events in Jamaica until 2006. CCW officials remain optimistic suitable investors can be found in Jamaica. Said one source, “Everyone complains about how bad everything is, and here is an opportunity get a return on investment and make a difference in the social climate of the country. Somebody will come forward and put this thing together.” One positive out of the postponement is that local Jamaican athletes will have more time to train before their debut is the pro wrestling ring. “These guys are going to be monsters by the time launch rolls around.”, said an unidentified official who has watch training sessions in Portmore. “They hit the weight room for hours before working their regular day jobs. Then, they spend the evening beating the shit out of each other.”
