Sources in CCW have told
me Trevor Berbick, former Canadian heavyweight boxing champion, has agreed
in principle to join CCW and become a pro wrestler. Augustus
Lee has had several phone conversations with Berbick and his manager about
the 59 year old boxer going through training, and possibly becoming a main
eventer. Lee has said to staff, "He laughed all the
way through, and suggested ways he could benefit the company." Berbick
isn't concerned about his age being a disadvantage. He was
training
for a
boxing match when Lee first contacted
him. According to sources, Lee got the idea of asking Berbick after seeing
him on "Impact" one Sunday morning. Lee reportedly said, "He was huge, and
in incredible shape for a guy pushing 60."
This is a brilliant move. Berbick's "bad boy" image will mesh perfectly
with the rebellious, abrasive nature of CCW. From a marketing perspective, Birbick
will lend both credibility and notoriety to CCW, and
Lee knows it. This is a chance at a new career for the controversial athlete.
I hope he
will do his family and friends proud. |
Jamaica Broadcasting Commission May Force Change in TV PlansThe Children’s Programming Code, guidelines created by the Jamaica Broadcasting Commission to protect Jamaica’s youth from questionable television, is making life difficult for Caribbean Championship Wrestling. The Code, which went into effect January 13, 2003, requires non-cable “free to air” television stations to post advisories and ratings on programs, and place certain programs after 10:00 P.M. to prevent viewing by minors. Rather than risk a fight with the Commission, CCW may move their planned Saturday afternoon program to a late night slot, and move their cable program Island Extreme from Thursday night to Saturday afternoon, as cable operators can ignore the rule. The original television plans called for a live broadcast on either CVM-TV or TVJ from the company’s Saturday afternoon event in Portmore, St Catherine. This program would have periodically cut away to live horse races from Caymanas Park, giving Saturday sports enthusiasts more to watch than music videos and annoyed crocodiles. According to Company President “Augie” Lee, this arrangement would have been a real winner for all concerned. “Ratings would have been through-the-roof.” Here is the problem (if you want to follow along, click here for the Children’s Programming Code). There are four distinct criteria which may force a show into a late-night time slot, violence, language, content, and nudity. According to Lee, the show was going to stay away from controversy. “I decided early on, not to include women wrestlers.” said Lee. “And, while there will be plenty of beautiful women in the latest dancehall fashions and a few swimsuits, we were going to stay away from overtly sexual content and nudity. Hell, I’m even fining wrestlers if they curse in the ring!”
