Many long-time visitors to the site will remember an article written by Dr. Dave Dost of Oregon World Wrestling, entitled “Want to be a pro wrestler? Start training now!”. For guys thinking about a career in wrestling, the article was invaluable. It is my pleasure to announce Dr. Dost is currently putting the finishing touches on a second article, focusing on the pro wrestler’s diet. Look for it in CCW Magazine soon.

That’s it for now. See you next issue!

Interview: CCW President
Augustus “Augie” Lee

CCW Mag: How will CCW be different from the only wrestling we have right now, the WWE?

Lee: There will be thousands of differences. CCW is a Jamaican company, and the Jamaican influence will be everywhere. The live shows and TV programs will be instantly identifiable to our fans. I’ve lived in The Bahamas for twelve years and Jamaica for over three years, and one thing I know for sure, CCW will NOT be MY show. This is pro wrestling with a Dancehall attitude. And, we are going to focus on athletic competition, while the WWE leans more toward entertainment. CCW will be rebellious, satirical, irreverent, and abrasive – but a lot of stuff you see on RAW or SMACKDOWN has no place in CCW. Here’s another difference. EVERY match will be a cage match in CCW. We are constructing a 12 foot high steel cage around the outside ring. When a man enters the ring, he’ll either win or lose, but he can’t run away!

CCW Mag: That’s good. But how come no women wrestlers?

Lee: This was a decision I made early on. You see, pro wrestling will no doubt have its critics among some religious leaders here in Jamaica. Many will see only the violence in our sport, without putting it in the context of athletic competition. I can defend pro wrestling, but I can’t defend the WWE.

CCW Mag: You mean the way women are portrayed on RAW and SMACKDOWN?

Lee: Right. Don’t get me wrong, there will be plenty of beautiful women featured at our events, but they won’t be wrestling.

CCW Mag: Let me ask you the most important question, Mr. Lee. Will CCW launch in August as planned?

Lee: Sadly, no. The problem is local investor participation. With the current economic climate, investors prefer to hold on to their money, or buy government paper. This does nothing to stimulate new business, and CCW is a new business. So the decision had to be made, wait for the Jamaican economy to turn around, or launch somewhere else. Trinidad & Tobago is our alternate launch site. But before I make the final decision, I am spending time in the States looking for foreign investors. Personally, I would much rather launch in Jamaica.

CCW Mag: So when will the first CCW show be?

Lee: The current plan calls for March 2004.

CCW Mag: We have heard there are guys already training.

Lee: It’s true. We are not actively recruiting wresters at this time however. The guys currently in training have been specially selected, and are going to make good use of the extra time they have to train.

CCW Mag: Who is the Head Trainer?

Lee: The man we selected for the job is Tracy Smothers. Tracy is a 19 year veteran of the sport. He has wrestled all over the world. His first national exposure came with WCW, then Smoky Mountain Wrestling. After a stint with the WWF, he went to work for Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). There, he was locker room leader and helped train younger wrestlers. Smothers is from Tennessee, but nonetheless became one of The Full Blooded Italians, and his interviews were hilarious. When ECW folded, he worked for the WWF again as trainer in their Memphis developmental program. But now, we have him. Smothers is a wrestler’s wrestler. He knows more than 90% of the guys you see on RAW. We are excited to have him with CCW.

CCW Mag: How many guys will he be training?

Lee: Right now there are fifteen or so, and we will add another thirty soon. Probably half of those forty five guys will actually make it to a probationary six month CCW contract.

CCW Mag: Why will only half make it?

Lee (grinning): Injuries.
