Now let me stay on my soapbox a while longer. The Jamaican people will ultimately decide if pro wrestling will succeed in this country. If given the opportunity, Jamaicans can grasp any endevour, so there is little doubt the top athletes in the company can go on to international careers if they so choose. But my hope is, the Jamaican people will insist these young men stay right here at home. We are a lot of things - but above all, we are a proud people. And we want to follow in the foosteps of our own heroes. I want the young children in my little neighborhood to share in the disappointments and the triumphs of thier favorite wrestlers each and every week. Because while the rest of us are entertained - the children will learn.

Want to be a pro wrestler? Start training now!

Previous

3. When training, go one to two sets with 30% of your maximum weight, with thirty repetitions. In other words if you can bench 200 pounds, your workout weight would be 60 lbs. (30% of 200) performing thirty repetitions. THE WEIGHT MUST BE MOVED THROUGH THE FULL RANGE OF MOTION IN A CONTROLLED, FAST MOVEMENT. This works much better for pro wrestlers than the typical crap of four sets of five reps, or three sets of ten reps. Most movements are performed very quickly, so train muscles to move through a range of motion very quickly. Just because some ass can push 300 pounds above his damn head, does not make him a pro wrestler.

Want to know why weight training for power works? New students don't screw themselves by lifting weights that are too heavy for them. Less stress on the connective tissues like ligaments and tendons, so careers last longer. You have the opportunity to spend less time in the weight room and more time in the damn ring where you belong. There will still be dramatic visual changes in most wrestlers (hypertrophy of the muscles). Motivation remains high, since you can see the changes in your musculature fairly quickly (and without 'roids). You can work out three times a week and not have to do a traditional split routine working legs one day and upper body another. Work out for an hour one day, recover fully after forty eight hours, then do it again. You can increase the weight when thirty repetitions becomes too easy, as this signals your maximum weight can probably be increased.

Using the above guidelines, make these lifts the core of your workout. Power Cleans, Shoulder Press, Incline Bench Press, Abdominal Crunches, Lat Pulls, Lunges, Squats, Push Jerks, Curls, and Pull-ups. Add other lifts for variety, and change the lifts if you feel you have reached a plateau.

Here's another way to impress Mr. Fancy Ass. Good cardio. I guarantee he is going to run you ragged, looking to see how quickly you "blow up" (start breathing heavily). Everything else being equal, he is going to choose guys who can run the ropes for twenty minutes without looking like a heart attack about to happen.

Solution? Get in the water. While any cardio workout will improve your stamina, I make my guys swim laps every other day. Swimming doesn't create any stress on joints or ligaments. Don't shorten your strokes. Swim through the full range of motion in controlled fast strokes, and you will see how quickly you'll improve. It's the PERFECT cardio workout. Unless you find yourself in bed with identical twin sisters. That's REALLY perfect.

That's all I can tell you about preparing for your tryout. If you are lucky enough to be chosen, go to The Forge every day and learn all you can. Augie Lee says main event guys will make more money than any other athletes in Jamaica. Working only an average of 20 minutes a week in the ring.

Good luck to all of you. You have no idea what you are getting into.

"Dr. Dave" Dost is the pro trainer for Oregon World Wrestling, and responsible for developing the careers of numerous pro wrestlers, including Shipwreck and "The Tongue". CCW tryouts for the full tuition scholarship program will take place in St. Catherine, Kingston, and Montego Bay the last week in April. Details coming soon.
